Who can install and certify a fire rated oil tank?
Every fire protected oil tank installation requires an independent sign-off to comply with building regulations. Failure to do so would render an installation non-compliant.
Independent sign off can be completed by one of the following methods:
- Stroma approved persons inspection
- Self-certification through a competent person scheme
- Certification via a building notice by local authority building control

Where can a conventional oil tank be installed?
Under building regulations, fire separation distances state minimum distances that a conventional (non-fire rated) oil tank can be installed from surrounding structures.
Fire separation distances
- 1.8m away from a building or structure (e.g. a garage or shed)
- 1.8m away from eaves of a building
- 1.8m away from building openings (such as doors or windows)
- 1.8m away from oil fired appliance flue terminals
- 760mm away from a non-fire rated boundary such as a wooden fence
- 600mm away from screening (e.g. trellis and foliage) that does not form part of the boundary
Where can fire protected tanks be installed?
Fire rated oil tanks can be installed as close as 300mm from structures including:
- Buildings and structures (including windows, doors, eaves, a garage or shed)
- A flue (provided heat doesn’t dispel onto the tank)
- Boundaries (including a wooden fence)
- Screening (including trellis and foliage)
We recommend these tanks are installed on a solid concrete base at least 100mm thick which extends at least 300mm around the tank’s perimeter. Please note, 600mm clearance is required where access to the tank is needed, e.g. at the front of the tank.
